Can’t skate, can administrate – my story and I’m sticking to it!
Now, you are thinking “how does he mind his own crease?” I don’t. Honestly, I would need two 2×4s strapped to my feet – not a one eighth inch metal blade to stand on. I have tried and the shin splints nearly killed me. Plus, watching my sons skate circles around me destroyed any pride I had in my skating ability.
Instead, my business partner, Kevin Hulsey and I decided to start “CreaseWarriors” a goaltender business. Makes a lot of sense for Kevin to go into business with a guy who can’t skate, right? Not at all, my expertise is in administration. I have managed a multi-million dollar company, facilitated events, managed hockey teams and I have a son who is a goalie (one is enough!). I have seen from a parent’s point of view the lack of goaltender training in western Wisconsin. It is tough to watch coaches who were players try to train a goaltenders and act like they know what to do (and then I have to mind my own crease). My son’s first coach was honest when he said he didn’t know what to do with goaltenders. He approached the association board to get a goalie coach, and that is how we met Kevin. Three years later, we started CreaseWarriors.
Personally, I am a man who serves God every day. I have a beautiful and supportive wife. We have been married for twelve years. We have four active boys. They keep us busy with homeschooling and their various activities. Also, we sponsor three boys from Compassion International. We consider them part of our family, and they call us their parents. My other activities include being a men’s pastor, jail ministry and involvement in church. I actually have to schedule personal time for hunting and fishing. Which seems to get less and less each passing year, but I am not complaining. Because, I love my life – and now I’m minding my own crease…
